21 Tip: A general rule of thumb is that if the stitch looks bad on the top it is the bottom tension. If the stitch looks bad on the bottom is the upper tension. 23 Quilt Top Puckers Is your backing fabric stretched too tight? While the b acking fabric needs to lie flat and without wrinkles, stretching it too tight can m ake the quilt top pucker.
